Pavakkai Kuzhambu

Ingredients:
Tamarind - amla size
Urad dhal - 1 tbsp
Milagu - 1/2 tsp
Red chilly - 2 or 3 nos
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Pavakkai / Bitter Gourd - 1 or 2 nos
Curry leaves - few
Asafoetida - a pinch
Rice flour - 1 tsp
Salt - to taste

Method:
Cut the pavakkai in circles and remove the seeds.Soak Tamarind in hot water for 15 minutes and extract the pulp.Take 1/3 of the extracted tamarind pulp, add a glass of water and salt.Add the pavakkai and cook for a few minutes.Turn off the stove and drain the water.Heat a little oil in a kadai, add all the remaining ingredients. Care not to burn the dhals. Now Blend the dhals to fine paste and add the paste to the remaining tamarind pulp along with salt and curry leaves.
When the kuzhambu starts to boil, add the cooked pavakkai.Mix rice flour with little water and make it like a batter.Add this batter to the kuzhambu and let it boil for another 15 minutes.Turn off the stove and season with mustard seeds.Serve hot with rice.Almost any karamathu (carrot / potato / cabbage) goes well with this kuzhambu.Even roasted papad makes a good combination for this kuzhambu.
